Daniel A. Higson is a principal with Hathaway, Perrett, Webster, Powers, Chrisman & Gutierrez. He has practiced law in Ventura County for 40 years in the areas of Civil Litigation, Business Law, Trusts & Estates, Probate, and Personal Injury. His primary emphasis has been representing creditors and debtors in bankruptcy cases.
Daniel has practiced extensively in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California, in the Santa Barbara, San Fernando Valley, Riverside and Santa Ana Divisions. He is admitted to practice in the United States District Court, as well as the State Courts of California. He represents clients in the Superior Courts of Ventura, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. In 1983, he was admitted to the United States Supreme Court Bar.
In 2000, the State Bar of California certified Daniel as a Bankruptcy Law Specialist. In 2007, the American Board of Certification also certified him as a Bankruptcy Law Specialist.
Daniel earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Redlands in 1970. Thereafter he served two years in the United States Army, including serving a tour of duty in Vietnam. He then earned a law degree from the University of LaVerne in 1976. He is an active member of the Ventura County Bar Association, having served on its Board of Directors. He has been a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute, the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys and the California Central District Consumer Bankruptcy Attorney’s Association.
Daniel and his wife, Deanna, have lived in Ojai for the past 30 years. They have four adult children and eight grandchildren. Daniel is a member of the Ojai Presbyterian Church and has served on its Board of Elders, and a member of the Ventura Yacht Club, where he enjoys racing sailboats.

Brett B. McMurdo is an associate with Hathaway Perrett Webster Powers Chrisman & Gutierrez.
Brett practices in the areas of employment, education, bankruptcy, personal injury, and business associations. He also assists in many of the Hathaway specialty areas. Brett has appeared in both state and federal courts from San Diego County to the San Francisco Bay area.
Prior to joining the Hathaway Firm, Brett was an associate at an insurance litigation firm where he specialized in breach of contract and bad faith actions. He also has substantial experience litigating municipal cases.
Brett received his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and his law degree from the University of California, Davis, where he served as an editor of the UC Davis Law Review. He is a member of the Ventura County Bar Association.
Brett lives in Ventura with his wife, Missy.

Juan M. Higuera is an associate with Hathaway Perrett Webster Powers Chrisman & Gutierrez.
Juan practices in the areas of criminal defense, education, bankruptcy, and personal injury. Juan is licensed to practice in all California state courts and has represented clients in counties all over the state.
Juan brings with him a diverse background which makes him well-suited as an advocate for the firm’s clients. Prior to joining the Hathaway team, Juan served as a Deputy District Attorney in Ventura County. As a prosecutor, Juan gained a wealth of trial experience and an invaluable insight into how the prosecution will approach a case.
Most recently, Juan practiced as an associate attorney at an insurance defense litigation firm where he specialized in bad faith litigation and personal injury defense. His time in civil litigation allowed Juan to gain a breadth of experience including drafting and arguing a variety of legal motions, taking and defending depositions, and an extensive familiarity with civil discovery.
Juan is also a former teacher and uniquely qualified to represent teachers, administrators, students and parents in matters concerning education law. His time in the classroom familiarizes him to understand many of the education related issues with which the Hathaway Law Firm is confronted.
Juan earned his undergraduate degree at the University of California at Santa Barbara and a teaching credential from California State University at San Bernardino.
Juan received his Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. During his time at Loyola, Juan was a member of the nationally ranked Byrne Trial Advocacy Team. As a member of the team, Juan earned numerous awards and recognitions including a Best Advocate award after competing against teams from across the nation, a Regional Championship and a Quarter-Finals appearance at the prestigious National Trial Competition.
Juan is a native of Indio, California, but his ties to the Central Coast go back more than a decade. A former resident of Ventura, Juan currently lives in Goleta with his wife.
